Seeds, Snow, & Simple Comforts from Our Homestead

Learning Old Fashioned Ways in a Modern World with Laura Lawrence

Hi Reader

It’s been one of those seasons around here.

We’ve been constantly bombarded with snow, and keeping up has been a full-time job—shoveling every entryway, making sure water stays fresh and unfrozen, and heading out twice a day, every day, to feed and care for the animals. It’s cold, it’s tiring… and it’s just part of the rhythm this time of year. We get ‘er done 💪❄️

Even in the middle of all that, I wanted to share a few things with you that I think you’ll really enjoy.

🌱 New Video: Choosing the Best Seeds
I just shared a new video all about how I choose seeds—what I look for, what actually matters, and how this one decision sets the tone for your entire growing season. If food freedom is important to you, this is a big one.

From broths to slow-cooked meals, it’s become a staple in our kitchen. If you’re trying to move away from coatings and want something durable, this has been a great find for us.

🧈 Butter Garlic Noodles with Capers (Comfort Food Win)
With the cold and long days, simple comfort food has been everything. One of our go-to meals lately has been my butter garlic noodles with capers—simple, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. It’s proof that good food doesn’t have to be complicated.

Learning Old Fashioned Ways in a Modern World with Laura Lawrence Hi Reader There’s a quiet confidence that comes from knowing your pantry can turn into real meals. All this in my latest blog post. Not convenience food. Not boxes and mixes. But ingredients that become nourishment. When I shop through Azure Standard, I’m always thinking long-term—what will truly feed my family well, no matter the season. For me, that starts with: Wheat berries to mill fresh flour and bake nourishing breads...

Being prepared on the homestead

Learning Old Fashioned Ways in a Modern World with Laura Lawrence Hi Reader Winter has a way of reminding us how quickly things can change. Power outages.Icy roads.Empty shelves.Long, quiet nights. Preparation isn’t about fear or panic—it’s about peace. I just shared a new page all about being prepared for winter and storms, written from the perspective of stewardship, responsibility, and real-life experience. It’s not extreme, and it’s not overwhelming. It’s the kind of preparedness families...

Learning Old Fashioned Ways in a Modern World with Laura Lawrence Hi Reader I wanted to send you a quick update on Seed to Plate as we move closer to the finish line. As I’ve been finalizing the book with the printer, I made an important decision about the quality of the final product. This book is meant to be used — in the kitchen, in the garden, and season after season — not just read once and set aside. Because of that, I’ve chosen to upgrade the interior pages and cover so the book is...
